Cyclone Idai – Here’s How We Can Help
And Happy Wednesday once again!
How’s your week been lady? I hope it hasn’t been all that bad. Mine has been crazy busy! Ever had a day where you literally wish you could be Joshua and get God to make time stand still? This has been me all week. Lol! Not to mention our power outages #Eskom #Eishkom.
Nevertheless, as busy or daunting as our weeks have been, there are those who have had their lives literally shifted because of events outside of their control. Yeah, you guessed it – Cyclone Idai. You can read more about the cyclone on various news platforms online but it has impacted Zimbabwe, Malawi and Mozambique really badly. Over 350 people are reported to have lost their lives and 400 000 displaced.
You know, I heard it in passing and almost didn’t think twice about it (as is the case with a lot of things happening lately I’m ashamed to say). But then my Aunt Sheila sent me a message about how she and a group of Advocates are trying to mobilize donations to assist those impacted in Zim, my home country. She shared a list of items that are needed desperately including something we take for granted like water then I was sobered.
I thought to myself: someone can no longer retreat to the safety and comfort of their bedroom because it’s under a tree somewhere. Someone else is missing a loved one who was swept away by the floods brought on by the cyclone. Yet another person spent hours in wet clothes and with no clue where they will sleep that night.
That is so real man. And as a wise young lady said to me as we chatted about this whole situation, if it were me affected by such a force of nature, I would greatly appreciate even a dry pair of clothes or a blanket because I literally have nothing.
Today, our hearts and prayers go out to the people of Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. We stand with our fellow Africans in letting them know they are not alone and we will do our best to support them. Not only that, we would like to offer practical help in whatever way we can, and we’d like to invite you to join us sis.
If you would like to donate and assist, please check out the below info:
- A group of Advocates are collecting donations of sanitary pads, blankets and clothing to pack and ship to Zimbabwe this weekend and next weekend. We are encouraged to make donations by ordering the goods at Makro online, and they will be collected on your behalf, or alternatively dropping them off at the Zimbabwean Consulate in Bedfordview (Ms Jemwa) or the Zimbabwe Embassy in Pretoria. They are NOT taking cash.
For more information on how you can assist with this initiative, please send us an email here.
- The department of International Relations & Cooperation are also seeking assistance of any kind to those affected in Malawi, Mozambique and Zimbabwe. Please see the below poster for details on how you can assist others through them.
- ADRA is doing amazing work to support those who have been displaced in Mozambique, Malawi and Zimbabwe. Please go here to assist them in their efforts.
- Gift of the Givers are also doing their part to help the affected in these countries, and you can give through them as well. Just visit their site by clicking here.
If you’re aware of any other ways that others can be a blessing to our brothers and sisters in these countries, please drop it in the comments section below. I really believe that in doing the little we can in such devastating circumstances, we are able to fulfill Mathew 25:40-45 in 2019. Let us keep our brothers and sisters in our prayers.
Thank you for taking the time to read this sis. I wish you a great week ahead and hope that you allow God to reveal to you exactly how He sees you.
Until next time, take care and know we’re praying for you.
